As we approach the end of 2023, many of us find ourselves reflecting on the changes we want to make in the coming year. One common question that arises during this time is whether it’s the right moment to explore new career opportunities. Allow me to share a story that might provide some valuable insights.
It was 2006, my business was thriving when I had lunch with one of my mentors, Pam. “Misti,“ she said, “you need to keep expanding your offerings.“
“No, I only want to focus on offering generational diversity coaching and training,“ I said. Pam didn’t push further, and I continued to enjoy the flow of opportunities that came my way.
Then, 2008 hit. I grew tired of the topic, and my wife and I had to move to a new city. Suddenly, the demand for generational diversity training diminished, and I found myself struggling to get work opportunities. The foundation of my entire career was based on a topic that was no longer in demand.
I desperately tried to figure out how to find new opportunities, but I floundered. Not only were businesses uninterested in investing in generational diversity training, but my confidence took a hit, making it difficult to articulate the value I could bring despite past successes. It took years of heartache to bounce back from this setback.
So, when is the best time to start looking for new opportunities and advancing your skills? The answer is two-fold: when you are thriving and anytime in between. When you’re thriving, it’s easier to approach interactions with a positive vibe and confidence. We all want to work with people who leave us feeling better after speaking with them. These individuals often possess a drive, commitment, and urgency that reflects their dedication to their craft.
The best time to start looking for a new job, project, or opportunity is now, especially when you are thriving. Prioritize personal and professional growth at every turn to ensure your long-term vitality in all aspects of your life, particularly within your career.
For leaders reading this, finding ways to challenge, equip, and support your team members’ growth is essential. The benefits extend beyond increased productivity and can lead to a stronger leadership bench, a positive culture, and renewed energy and innovation. A culture that values continual growth, expansion, and improvement, combined with clear and generous communication, has a profound impact on everyone it touches. Who wouldn’t want to be part of a team that constantly seeks ways to serve and support one another?
As we stand on the cusp of a new year, let us embrace personal and professional growth, seize opportunities, and remain committed to our own vitality and the success of our teams. The best time to start looking for new job opportunities and advancing our skills is now. Embrace growth and watch as it propels you towards a fulfilling and rewarding career path.
