After a nearly 20-mile bike ride under the radiant sun, I made a delightful pit stop at the Lewes Bake Shoppe to
collect the coffee I had pre-ordered. As I stepped into the cozy shop, Tara, the proficient manager, exchanged a knowing glance with Steph and gestured towards the awaited coffee batch, “There should be three bags of Hawaiian hazelnut there for her.”
Imbued with gratitude for the sense of belonging at this cherished spot in Lewes, I met Tara’s gaze and expressed my appreciation, “Thank you so much.” Her reply was warm, “You’re welcome,” as our eyes locked. Captivated by the striking blue hue of her eyes, I couldn’t resist complimenting her, “Your eyes are truly stunning!”
In a synchronized response, Steph chimed in, “Yes, they are… I find myself staring into them all the time.”
Noticing the azure depths of Steph’s eyes, I playfully remarked, “Do you find yourself mesmerized when you look
in the mirror?”
Amidst laughter, Tara added, “Your eyes are blue too…”
“I do!” Steph confessed with confidence, “I admire them… and when the light catches them just right, they seem even more beautiful,” embracing self-appreciation effortlessly, almost as if such self-acknowledgment was commonly expressed.
In the midst of my rants about how great it is that she could acknowledge and appreciate her own beauty, she shared about a previous boyfriend she had who had refused to complement her eyes because he felt she did a good enough job on her own.
“Well, that’s pretty shitty of him,” I said.
With a hint of jest, she declared, “And that is why he’s an ‘ex’!” Wow there was great laughter stemming from our bellies, there was also a great deal of awe in the way stuff demonstrates growth through humor and self-appreciation.
As I pedaled homeward, reflections danced through my mind, emphasizing the profound impact of seemingly insignificant encounters like the one at the Lewes Bake Shoppe. These fleeting moments possess the transformative ability to shape our lives if we are attuned to those who embody qualities we aspire to cultivate.
