Sometimes, the moments that define our leadership aren’t the calm, controlled meetings or polished presentations — they’re the times we let our authentic passion come through.
A client recently shared one of those moments with me. At the end of a long day, a rumor had been circulating that she was “cutting all IEP students’ days in half.” Frustrated, she finally let it out — loudly and passionately explaining her position, her goals, and her commitment to all students’ success.
Afterwards, she apologized for losing her cool. But something unexpected happened. One of her most skeptical team members, one of her “naysayers,” said:
“This is the first time I have heard you get angry and actually heard the passion for this job in your voice… Part the water, Moses — I will get on board with that.”
This moment illustrates a powerful truth about leadership: authenticity and passion create connection.
By allowing herself to express her genuine care, she revealed something her team hadn’t seen before — her deep commitment to the work. It wasn’t just about policies or procedures; it was about heart, vision, and the stakes for the people she serves.
And it didn’t stop there. The next day, while she was out of her office, a team member quietly hung a wall piece — an image of water parting toward a brilliant white light. When she returned, she found it there, along with a simple message: “This is for when you think you’re losing.”
A stunning, unexpected gesture — one that reflected the impact of her authenticity and the connection she had sparked through her passion.
Lessons for Leaders
- Authenticity is a superpower. Showing your true self — even your frustration or passion — can inspire trust and alignment.
- Passion is contagious. People respond to energy and conviction more than words alone.
- Vulnerability builds credibility. Apologizing or acknowledging strong emotions doesn’t weaken you; it shows awareness and humanity.
- Small gestures matter. Recognition from your team reinforces culture and connection in ways words sometimes can’t.
Leadership isn’t about always staying calm or perfect. Sometimes it’s about letting your heart show — and trusting that your team will see your commitment and follow.
