Not long ago, I was standing in an office building with two people who are deeply connected to a leadership initiative I co-lead—L3, a free monthly lunch where local leaders gather to learn from and support each other.

As we stood there chatting about which businesses we might invite next, Ben, one of my teammates, mentioned how discouraging it can be when you put effort into reaching out—sharing a book, a resource, or an invitation—and don’t hear anything back.

That’s when Greg, one of our long-time supporters, said something that stuck with me:

“That’s the thing about fishing… you just have to keep casting your line.”

It hit me right between the eyes—because as metaphors go, fishing is a pretty accurate one for the experience of selling, sharing, and putting your work out into the world.

There’s just one thing: I don’t like fishing.

I don’t like slimy things. I don’t like standing around waiting. I’d honestly rather go to the store and buy the fish. It’s cleaner, more efficient, and way less uncomfortable.

But Greg’s comment made me think: I do enjoy “fishing”—just not all kinds.

Selling Bags at the Farmers Market

Each week, I volunteer at our local farmers market selling reusable tote bags. But let me be clear—I don’t just stand behind a booth.

I walk around, engage people, and try to sell bags in the most ridiculous, hilarious ways possible. I crack jokes, start conversations with strangers, and use over-the-top lines like:

“Would you like to buy a beautiful bag? Look… it’s so sexy.”

Sometimes people buy one. Sometimes they just laugh and walk away. And sometimes they hang around just to watch me try to sell a bag.

And I absolutely love it.

It’s not about closing a sale—it’s about creating a moment. Making someone laugh. Inviting them into a fun, lighthearted connection that also happens to support something meaningful.

Because under all that humor, there’s purpose. Those bags support our local farmers market. They help people access fresh, locally grown food. They raise resources for a community I care about.

I’m not just selling a bag. I’m casting joy and purpose into the world—one ridiculous sales pitch at a time.

Sharing the L3

It’s the same thing with L3. When I talk to local business owners about attending, I’m not “selling” an event—I’m inviting them into a community.

L3 is a space where leaders get to connect, grow, and learn from each other. It’s where I get to share my passion for communication, leadership, and helping teams thrive.

And yes, it also gives me a chance to build credibility and share my gifts—but it never feels like self-promotion. It feels like service.

I’m not pushing something on people. I’m offering something I deeply believe in.

What I’ve Realized: Not All Selling Feels the Same

There’s a big difference between:

  • Selling yourself – which can feel awkward, vulnerable, and personal.
  • Selling something you’ve created – which adds a layer of confidence and separation.
  • Sharing something with a higher purpose – which feels generous, joyful, and completely natural.

When the why is strong enough, the how becomes easy.

When I know the impact something has—whether it’s connecting farmers with resources or leaders with each other—I’m not worried about whether or not someone “buys.” I’m just happy to cast the line.

A Reflection for All of Us

If you’ve ever felt uncomfortable putting yourself out there—whether it’s promoting your business, your project, or your passion—consider asking:

  • What greater purpose does this serve?
  • Who benefits from this?
  • Why does it matter beyond the transaction?

Because once you connect to that deeper purpose, the fear and awkwardness start to fade. You’re no longer fishing for attention or approval—you’re casting with clarity, confidence, and conviction.

And If You’re Local…

If you’re a business owner or leader in our area, consider this your invitation to the next L3 Leadership Lunch. It’s a free gathering (just cover your lunch) where leaders come together to grow, encourage, and equip one another.

And hey—if you catch me at the farmers market, don’t be surprised if I try to sell you a tote bag. Mostly just for fun.
