It’s entirely too easy to allow yourself to horde work because it needs to be done right. The results are too important, and your schedule is too tight to teach the person on your team who keeps asking for opportunity.
And, so—you put your ambitions on hold, as you continue sludging through, checking tasks off your list. Meanwhile, this little voice inside of you keeps nagging you to move onto new opportunities. Problem is—you don’t trust the job will be done right.
Such a tight grip on important projects is exactly the reason many talented employees lose focus, disengage, and ultimately go in search of opportunities elsewhere. It doesn’t have to be this way.
One way to set them (and you) up for success is to co-create a short list of the tools, experiences and training they need to successfully take over the work. Remember, they want to do great work, though the path may not be obvious to them.
They may get overwhelmed. We all get overwhelmed—it’s a part of the journey of discovery for both sides. So, expect overwhelm. In fact, welcome it as an opportunity to keep both of you focused on the bigger picture (growth, success, and freedom to keep evolving) as you navigate new terrain.
Before you know it, they’ll begin flapping their wings on their own and you’ll be free to challenge yourself and evolve in your career.
